The anti-abortion
and gay law demonstrators in Malawi on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 sparkled the newlines
as thousands of people living in different areas across the country need no
laws being enacted on abortion and same sex marriages.
Organizers of
demonstrations mainly from religious groupings of Episcopal Conference of
Malawi which is a catholic Bishops group, Evangelical Association of Malawi and
Muslim Association of Malawi said they are against establishment of abortion
and same sex laws in the country as it contradicts religion and traditional
values.
All these
are coming as there have been rumours going through that the Malawi Parliament
would discuss about the abortion bill sooner time comes to be enacted into a
law.
Malawi Laws
clearly stipulates the prohibition of abortion expect the time mother’s life is
in jeopardy.
In the year
2000, then government pushed back the bill to Malawi Law Commission an organization
which has mandate to review and approve laws.
Unfortunately,
the body recommended then government to empanel the issue to Special Law
Commission which for now it has been said it has the report to present to the
country on the matter.
However, in
recent government statement signed by the Minister of Information, Malison Ndau
said government would not act own its own if is to approve these laws but refer
back to the public to get their views.
“Government
respects the views of all people, and on this matter we will seek referendum to
judge,” Statement reflects.
On the other
side, members of civil society groups have also been calling off for
anti-abortion and same sex demonstrations citing it deals with people’s lives.
